Why did the Columbus Ballet force out David Herriott 7 weeks before the Nutcracker?

That is the question isn't it.

Was is because he didn't cave into someone's daughter when she stamped her little foot and said she didn't want to dance with the partner Mr Herriott assigned her?

Was it because the someone bellowed like a water buffalo and stormed around like some enraged herd beast threatening legal action because someone took her petition?

Was it because Susan Wirt of CSU had promised the Artistic Director position to Mrs Hirsch and the uproar about the spoiled brats quitting the Nutcracker provided the perfect opportunity for them both to be rid of Mr Herriott forever?

Maybe all of the above.

No matter, 7 weeks before the performance they make a decision that will effect hundreds of people without taking this into consideration. Good to see its all about the dancers!

  1. even though I commented about the big story being rediculous and unneeded and this whole thing being like a bunch of bitchy little girls from the common highschool drama group, I do agree with "JOINES" note once again I am the annoyed son of a Balett parent/brother to a dancer. I have NO idea (nor do I care) who started what but just comming from the outside I personaly think that this is all completely stupid. Like I said before you are all acting like you are back in Highschool while im still wishing I were out of all the horrible gossipy trashing of each other. The firing of this David Harriot was stupid, selfish, and from what ive heard from all sides, a huge self centered attempt at making 2-3 peoples friends get to higher places because they didnt like someone for not giving their daughters the best parts. The intimidation of little girls is just pathetic and shows that whoever is doing this has no real power in the world and is having to take out their anger on defenceless little children. Anyway, for those who are on the side that is complaining and posting those stories, you are pretty bad yourselves. I understand that the things that were done were bad, but honestly the ammount of time spent on this balett thing is rediculous. A teacher of mine once said "If your parents taught you that life was fair, then they did you a disservice." That is true. Either way the fact that a Highschool student who isnt even affected by any of this, is the one stepping up to say that both parties are fighting just like Republicans and Democrats do (just a bunch of name calling and petty mockery) is PATHETIC. Think about what you are doing here and correct your pathetic unfulfilling lives.

  2. This entire blog is a product of a disgruntled customer of which there were a few. Much of the info contained is based on half truths, distorted facts and just lack of the facts. Columbus Ballet has done the responsible thing and any questions should be taken to the board.

  3. Mr. Joines,
Did you know that David, at the beginning of this school year, resigned from CSU and wanted only to work for TCB. CSU was left without someone to run the school.

At this time David already had another gig going on in Alabama. These conflicting interests were not in the best interest for our sons and daughters, wouldn't you agree?

Maria was asked to lead the program at CSU from that point on and agreed to work with David with the choreography. David's plan was to rehearse 2 weekends per month and have Maria and the other teachers do the other two. Maria was not getting paid for any of this but that is not the issue. Issue is that David's plan was not working because it created many logistical problems for the teachers and the TCB Board. This arrangment was slowly becoming a nightmare.

David would have been fired before, back when he resigned from CSU but because everyone was caught by surprise they opted to take time to sort things out.

The Board knew about Maria, some remember her from when she was the artistic director and had her own studio in north Columbus with over 150 students, and because she founded The Columbus Ballet, first as Ballet Arts of Columbus and within a year, changed the name to The Columbus Ballet(1995-1996).

Having a person in town with her qualifications made the Board's decision easier. Otherwise they would have had a terrible Nutcracker: Artistic Director absent 50% of time is ridiculous and end result would have proven it. Eventually TCB would have had to find a new Artistic Director.

There, Mr. Joines, these are the facts. There was no trikery, no traps, just a business decision based on events that started when David quit... not fired, but quit CSU. You will continue with this nonsense, I know, but you are doing more damage to the young ladies that are reading this than to TCB.

How do I know these facts, because I am in business and have met with some of these folks. A few members from the board, some dancers, teachers, and others. They are all decent people seeking to give our children a healthy experience with the ballet.

What the Board did was make a hard decision and knowing that some folks would not agree. But again this was a business decision and not a crucifixion.
